Severe Convective Windstorms in Europe: Climatology, Preconvective Environments, and Convective Mode

چکیده

Abstract The frequency of European convective windstorms, environments in which they form, and their organizational modes remain largely unknown. A climatology is produced using 10 233 severe wind reports from the Severe Weather Database between 2009 2018. days have increased 50 yr −1 to 117 2018, because an increase reporting. highest occurred across central Europe, particularly Poland. Reporting was most frequent summer, when a windstorm every other day on average. preconvective environment assessed 361 proximity soundings 45 stations 2006 clustering technique used distinguish different nine variables. Two for storms occurred: Type 1, generally low-shear–high-CAPE (convective available potential energy; mostly warm season) 2, high-shear–low CAPE (mostly cold season). Because mode often relates type weather hazard, studied 185 windstorms that 2013 In Type-1 environments, cells, accounting 58.5% events, followed by linear (29%) nonlinear noncellular (12.5%). Type-2 (55%), cells (36%) (9%). Only 10% were associated with bow echoes, lower percentage than studies, suggesting forecasters should not necessarily wait see echo before issuing warning strong winds.

Spatial Distributions of Tornadic Near-Storm Environments by Convective Mode

The characteristics of near-storm environments have been elucidated by several studies of observed soundings near reported tornadoes (Maddox 1976; Kerr and Darkow 1996), all soundings for multiple severe weather hazards during a complete year (Rasmussen and Blanchard 1998), or long-period samples of soundings associated with severe thunderstorms (Craven and Brooks 2004). Meanwhile, much attenti...

- 1 - Severe Convective Mesosystems in New England

Title: Severe Convective Mesosystems in New England Author: James Elbert Kester Submitted to the Department of Meteorology on February 5, 1974 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science. This study of convection over New England is divided into two parts. Part I is a search for a consistent mesoscale pressure pattern associated with severe convective storms o...

Convective aggregation in realistic convective-scale simulations

To investigate the real-world relevance of idealized-model convective self-aggregation, five 15 day cases of real organized convection in the tropics are simulated. These include multiple simulations of each case to test sensitivities of the convective organization and mean states to interactive radiation, interactive surface fluxes, and evaporation of rain. These simulations are compared to se...

The Statistical Severe Convective Risk Assessment Model

This study introduces a system that objectively assesses severe thunderstormnowcast probabilities based on hourly mesoscale data across the contiguous United States during the period from 2006 to 2014. Previous studies have evaluated the diagnostic utility of parameters in characterizing severe thunderstorm environments. In contrast, the present study merges cloud-to-ground lightning flash data...

Scalar Mixing in Droplet Arrays in Stagnant and Convective Environments

Modelling sprays and spray combustion is a challenging task due to the wide range of the associated length and time scales and the complex interaction of turbulence and the physico-chemical processes, such as heat and mass transfers across interfaces. Most computational studies of evaporating sprays do not resolve the liquid phase nor the near field and the droplets are treated as point sources...
